Salted Caramel Apples

Y’all, if anyone knows who stole the sun from the south could you kindly ask for its return?

DSC_0136

I think it’s been at least 2 weeks since the sun has appeared for more than a few 5 minute teasers.

DSC_0218

And that’s just dang depressing.  Throw in a hurricane and it’s time for some other form of sunshine!  So we are treating this Monday like a Friday and cheering up with some salted caramel apples.

Cheers to sunshine for everyone!  That’s it.

Salted Caramel Apples

Ingredients

  • 9 medium apples stems removed, washed, and completely dry - I used honeycrisp - see the update note below
  • 2 bags of Kraft caramel squares
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sea salt

Instructions

  1. Heat caramels according to package instructions
  2. Insert a stick into the top of each apple
  3. Dip apples into caramel, turn to coat, let excess drip while continuing to turn and scrape the bottom of the apple on the side of the pan
  4. Transfer to a wax paper lined baking sheet
  5. Drop a couple of pinches of sea salt while the caramel is still warm
  6. Repeat with the rest of the apples
  7. Refrigerate to set

UPDATE:  I forgot to add that I made these last year and all the caramel slid off – epic disaster!  Some apples have a wax coating which I believe was the cause.  I saw Giada remove the wax by boiling 6 cups of water with 1/4 teaspoon of white vinegar and adding the apples for 4 seconds each.  I didn’t have the epic fail this time, so I recommend it.

Omg, Rachelle, I have been dying over here!!! I’m cold, wet and I NEED some sunshine! I told Boy I’m going to drive an hour to find a tanning bed if I have to, just so I can feel some sort of warmth on my body! Lol This weather all sorts of sucks.. unlike these caramel apples! These are gorgeous and the perfect way to make me currently stop missing the sunshine state! Pinned! Xo

These apples look incredible! I love making caramel apples, but I’ve never thought about adding a pinch of salt. You win Mondays! P.S. The sun is up here in upstate New York, but it comes with overnight temps in the 30s…we can trade if you’d like? 🙂

That weather doesn’t sound nice. I’ve never been near anyplace during hurricane weather and I don’t think I want to either. These caramel apples look like they might bring a little sunshine….even if it’s just a sunshiny feeling!

I grew up in South Florida and am used to hurricanes and rain every day for a solid month. Super depressing but this kind of weather was a lot more fun as I got into drinking age because we would have hurricane parties. So bust out the beer, start drinking, and turn that frown upside down! Also, I’m totally into this recipe. Caramel apples are normally too sweet for me but the salt on the outside will break that sweetness up nicely AND I bet they are awesome with a beer. We are going to a Halloween party and I’m bringing these bad boys with me!

The caramel slid off my apples last year, too! I’ve gotta try Giada’s trick. Because yours look so perfect. I tried washing off the wax, but that stuff is more like glue. Kind of icky, if you think about it.
    Best caramel apples ever!

Wasn’t that a total bummer, Mir?!?! I couldn’t figure out what what going wrong and then I saw Giada on TV. I was going to try it with organic apples because I figured there would be no wax, but the apples weren’t so hot, so I ended up with the waxy ones from the grocery. Giada’s trick seemed to work! I hope yours turn out next time!
