Y’all, if anyone knows who stole the sun from the south could you kindly ask for its return?
I think it’s been at least 2 weeks since the sun has appeared for more than a few 5 minute teasers.
And that’s just dang depressing. Throw in a hurricane and it’s time for some other form of sunshine! So we are treating this Monday like a Friday and cheering up with some salted caramel apples.
Cheers to sunshine for everyone! That’s it.
Salted Caramel Apples
- 9 medium apples stems removed, washed, and completely dry - I used honeycrisp - see the update note below
- 2 bags of Kraft caramel squares
- 1 tablespoon coarse sea salt
Heat caramels according to package instructions
Insert a stick into the top of each apple
Dip apples into caramel, turn to coat, let excess drip while continuing to turn and scrape the bottom of the apple on the side of the pan
Transfer to a wax paper lined baking sheet
Drop a couple of pinches of sea salt while the caramel is still warm
Repeat with the rest of the apples
Refrigerate to set
UPDATE: I forgot to add that I made these last year and all the caramel slid off – epic disaster! Some apples have a wax coating which I believe was the cause. I saw Giada remove the wax by boiling 6 cups of water with 1/4 teaspoon of white vinegar and adding the apples for 4 seconds each. I didn’t have the epic fail this time, so I recommend it.
Cheyanne @ No Spoon Necessary
Omg, Rachelle, I have been dying over here!!! I’m cold, wet and I NEED some sunshine! I told Boy I’m going to drive an hour to find a tanning bed if I have to, just so I can feel some sort of warmth on my body! Lol This weather all sorts of sucks.. unlike these caramel apples! These are gorgeous and the perfect way to make me currently stop missing the sunshine state! Pinned! Xo
OMG Chey! Me too! It’s been soooooo nasty! They say we’ll have sun tomorrow – we can only hope. Otherwise head this way I’ll go with you to find a tanning bed!
Gayle @ Pumpkin 'N Spice
You just can’t go wrong with a classic fall treat like this! Caramel apples are one of my favorites, especially when they’re homemade. Sounds delicious, Rachelle!
Ive just made some chocolate apples like this….love the idea of a salted caramel version! So delicious for fall!
Whoa! Chocolate apples sound fantastic!
Dannii @ Hungry Healthy Happy
Yes, Yes, YES to anything salted caramel. I think it might just be my favourite flavour ever (but don’t hold me to that decision).
The perfect autumn treat!
Ha! I won’t hold you to an exclusive relationship with caramel, Dannii!
David @ Spiced
These apples look incredible! I love making caramel apples, but I’ve never thought about adding a pinch of salt. You win Mondays! P.S. The sun is up here in upstate New York, but it comes with overnight temps in the 30s…we can trade if you’d like? 🙂
Wow! Thanks David! I don’t think I’ve ever won a Monday before! 30s? No trade! 🙂
Manali @ CookWithManali
Oh man, I am so not looking forward to winters:/ even though sun is shining bright here in Seattle I know it won’t last for long! I am crazy about Salted Caramel so I will take this entire batch, they look so good!
Me either, girlfriend! At least you have some sun before then! Thanks!
It is getting pretty cold around here! These caramel apples look amazing! Pinned!
Thanks Mira! It’s pretty chilly here right now with this cold front and nasty weather happening!
Kristen @ The Endless Meal
I’ve never made caramel apples before but I have a Halloween party coming up and I think I’ll have to give it a try. These look so good!
Caramel apples would be perfect for a Halloween party!
Medha @ Whisk & Shout
These look fabulous! Love the salty sweet components here!
They were totally delicious and fun! Thanks Medha!
Kathy @ Beyond the Chicken Coop
That weather doesn’t sound nice. I’ve never been near anyplace during hurricane weather and I don’t think I want to either. These caramel apples look like they might bring a little sunshine….even if it’s just a sunshiny feeling!
Hurricanes are no fun, Kathy! Fingers crossed that the weather reports are accurate and we’ll see some sun tomorrow!
Maya @ Treats and Eats
Oooh, this is a perfect fall treat! We’ve had a bunch of rain up here but nothing like you guys. All that rain definitely calls for treating Monday like Friday!
I couldn’t agree more, Maya!
Kelly - Life Made Sweeter
It’s been so gloomy and chilly where I am too. These salted caramel apples are exactly what we need to brighten everything up! They looks SO SO good!
They totally cheered me up, Kelly!
Shelby @ Go Eat and Repeat
Hurricanes always make me nervous but fortunately they are off the coast this time. For me it means all sorts of baking! Totally adding these salted caramel apples onto my to-make list!
Hurricanes totally = stress baking, Shelby!
karrie @ Tasty Ever After
I grew up in South Florida and am used to hurricanes and rain every day for a solid month. Super depressing but this kind of weather was a lot more fun as I got into drinking age because we would have hurricane parties. So bust out the beer, start drinking, and turn that frown upside down! Also, I’m totally into this recipe. Caramel apples are normally too sweet for me but the salt on the outside will break that sweetness up nicely AND I bet they are awesome with a beer. We are going to a Halloween party and I’m bringing these bad boys with me!
Ok. I’m totally throwing a hurricane party next season and you are coming. Bring Chey! I’m totally busting out the beer and turning that frown upside down because today I SAW THE SUN!!!! Woo hoo! Happy Halloween caramel apple party, girlfriend!
Anu-My Ginger Garlic Kitchen
Oh gawd! I so wish to bite my screen after seeing these beauties. These look wonderfully yum and absolutely FALLTASTIC. It’s so cold here too! 🙂
Goodness gracious, girl! You’ll totally break your teeth! Just make your own – they are totally easy! 🙂 Falltastic! I LOVE it!
Dani @ Dani California Cooks
My mom would LOVE these. Give her salted caramel anything!
Well, girl, just get you some caramel, salt, and apples and make her some!
I have never really tried the sweet and salty flavor combo…. Clearly it’s bombtastic though… Where’s the damn salt shaker!?
In my cabinet! Where else would the salt shaker be? Totally bombtastic!
The caramel slid off my apples last year, too! I’ve gotta try Giada’s trick. Because yours look so perfect. I tried washing off the wax, but that stuff is more like glue. Kind of icky, if you think about it.
Best caramel apples ever!
Wasn’t that a total bummer, Mir?!?! I couldn’t figure out what what going wrong and then I saw Giada on TV. I was going to try it with organic apples because I figured there would be no wax, but the apples weren’t so hot, so I ended up with the waxy ones from the grocery. Giada’s trick seemed to work! I hope yours turn out next time!
Jess @ whatjessicabakednext
Really missing the warm sunny weather too! These caramel apples would definitely make the perfect autumn or halloween treat! 😀
No sun = 🙁 Jess!
Salted Caramel Apples? Yes, please! Nothing screams autumn like these apples, my dear! YUM!
Thanks Annie! Caramel apples are a total fall favorite!
Katalina @ Peas and Peonies
I am really loving that shiny caramel, the perfect fall treat!
Jess @ Flying on Jess Fuel
Aww man, no sun is a bummer! But I’d definitely be cheered up by these apples! Such a fun fall treat!
No sun is a total bummer! So jealous of your California address right now! 🙂
Keri @ Fashionable Foods
I sure hope you get some sun back! These salted caramel apples look just perfect. Fall classics like these are the best!
Wow. These look so yummy . will definitely try.
Jamie @ Medium Sized Family
I can’t believe I’ve never made caramel apples before. These look amazing!
I totally had some epic fails with the caramel apples! I recommend Giada’s vinegar method! Thanks for visiting, Jamie!
Cristina @ I Say Nomato
This looks so easy and delicious… I’m loving salted caramel anything! This has apples so it’s healthy, right? right????? Thanks for sharing with the #wednesdayshowcaseparty!
Apples = healthy in my book! Thanks for letting me party with you!
Jenna @ A Savory Feast
What a great idea! I have been wanting to try making caramel apples this year. Since salted caramel is one of my favorite flavor combos, this is one I’ve got to try.
Caramel apples are the best, Jenna!
